Boom and Rust

A quest for a more thoughtful public discourse.

A scientist and a denier of global warming walk into a bar.
Denier: Bartender show me your strongest whiskey!
Bartender: This one here is 95% percent alcohol.
Denier: *slams down fist and leaves the bar in a hurry*
Scientist: You know, that’s the problem with these guys. You show them the proof and they still don’t buy it.

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

I recently restarted an old project. I’m trying to write a novel.  The subject matter involves the very male dominated professional football world and I haven’t yet decided whether I’m going to try to include much in the way of female characters.  I have soooo much to say about women in society, there’s a bunch of strong opinions here, but I’m leaning toward leaving this story almost exclusively male and addressing the women in society themes in another project. Partly this is because the current project is supposed to be more of a short, fun, noir/murder mystery type thing. But also because I wanted to use this as a learning experience to become a better writer, before attempting more serious fiction and bringing in more serious themes.  But, it is definitely on my mind these days with all of the craziness in the public discourse about contraception and such.

When it comes to taxes, capital gains should not be treated differently from income derived from investment in human capital, an economist writes.
